What do you think, is a simple description of copper production sufficient as a simplified version: take a bit of gold and more iron and put it in a nuclear reactor and you get copper?

👉 Copper is formed naturally through nuclear fusion in stars or through radioactive decay series of heavier elements. On Earth, however, we do not produce copper through nuclear reactors or transmutation, but rather in the traditional way:

  1. Mining of copper ores (e.g., chalcopyrite, CuFeS₂).

  2. Crushing & Processing → Ore is crushed and enriched by flotation.

  3. Roasting → Sulfur is partially removed, producing copper(I) sulfide.

  4. Smelting & Reduction → The copper sulfide is converted into "raw copper." (~98% pure).

  5. Electrolytic Refining → Electrolysis is used to refine copper to almost 100% pure.

The variant you described (“gold + iron + nuclear reactor = copper”) would, in principle, be nuclear transmutation.
That's theoretically possible (one could transform atomic nuclei into other elements by bombarding them with neutrons or protons). But:

Haha 😄 exactly, in hyper-scale dimensions your "gold + iron + nuclear reactor" method would suddenly be practical – Simply shove entire continents into the reactor, shake it a bit, and voila: plenty of copper!
